Fill and Opacity in layer palette

The fill and opacity of the layer content determines not only appearance but also how the layers blend with each other. Beside that, they also determine how the layer effects interact with the layer content. Although you can control the opacity with the Opacity slider which located at the top of the Layers palette) or from the Layer Styles dialog box, the fill levels can be controlled with the Fill command. When you lower the fill level, any effects (Layer Styles) are unaffected. A simple sample tutorial has shown as below:

Layers rasterizing

Certain features of vector data when composed inside layers, such as type, shapes, vector mask, fill content, and smart objects, the data mast have to be rasterized before the layers could fully editable with painting and filtering with effects. After layers are rasterized, the all datas are converted to pixels and each pixel’s location would be transformed.

To rasterize a layer, just click on any layer, then choose Layer menu and choose Rasterize of submenu. Alternatively, you can also use the feature by Right-click (Windows), or Ctrl-click (Mac OS) the layer tile and select the appropriate item from the contextual menu. There are three downsides to rasterizing vector data. One, the file size is increased because not only must each pixel’s location be described using bits but so must its color values. Two, images composed of pixels are resolution dependent and can suffer from loss of quality when they are output to a larger-than-optimal resolution. Three, the operation cannot be reversed without recourse to expensive third-party plug-ins.

TIP: Before rasterizing a layer, consider creating a duplicate that you can fall back onshould the need arise.
